Spokesman Bureau of Statistics of Nepal, Bikash Bista, said that the new gender categorization is an effort to change the image of Nepal from traditional country to country moderate conservative who has a new angle.

However, the gender recognition endorsement is not an easy matter. Gay activist, Sunil Babu Pant, saying that they should press the government for recognition of their sexual orientation.

"It was only when we say will bring this issue to court, the government approved the new categorization of gender," says Babu.

If filed, Babu and his people will most likely win. This is thanks to the legalization of the termination rules of gender and sexual orientation discrimination by the Nepal Supreme Court in 2007. This law also regulates the freedom of a person in Nepal to choose their gender.

Looking ahead, the activists will press the government to legalize same-sex marriage. "There are 50 to 60 gay couples waiting to get married after same-sex marriage legalized," says Babu.
